Celebrating art, music, shaping and of course longboarding, the Vans Duct Tape Invitational hosted by legendary surfer Joel Tudor in NYC was one of this week-end you will remember all your life. In perfect conditions, Harrison Roach and Kirra Seale won the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational held in Rockaway beach, New York City.

It doesn’t feel like a contest. More like a festival. Or like an art show. Or like an extended weekend of good friends, good surfing and good times.

The Vans Duct Tape Invitational is truly one of a kind. It’s a global tour (or festival, art show, etc) featuring surfers hand-picked by the one and only Joel Tudor. The contests are always accompanied by music, art, shaping and beach cleanups — half the fun begins when the heats end — and it makes several stops around the world, bringing style and mayhem to each one. There’s no World Champion. No point system. It’s all for the now.

The best thing about the Duct Tape is that it adds an element of originality to contrast all the hyper-competitive surfing that saturates this world. It’s a different state of mind. And it serves as a reminder of the loose, renegade culture that drew a lot of us into classic surfing to begin with.

People here aren’t doing what they do for scores, followers or clout. They’re doing it simply because it’s fun.

Anyway, because it needed a winner, in the Women’s longboarding competition, Hawaiian Kirra Seale claimed her first ever victory in the Duct Tape contest, showing great skills on the nose, riding effortlessly on the long waves of Rockaway beach.

In the Men’s division, style master Harrison Roach took the lead. With such a unique style, Harrison deserved his win.
